Our personalities are predetermined as a result of our genes before we are born and there is nothing we can do to alter our character traits. To what extent do you agree?

Human personality is sometimes believed to be nothing more than a set of genes, thus, there is little if any room for changing people’s characters. Despite some features being indisputably inborn, I strongly believe in human abilities to adapt to their personal needs as well as social requirements, which is part and parcel of living in a human society.

Though some fundamental characteristics are known to be genetically programmed, many qualities are developed in accordance with personal needs. This is because our temperament, being innate, only shapes the foundation to a variety of personal quality sets that a person develops to address the demands of life. On no account should the power latent in personal determination to changes be ignored. Particularly, an introvert can significantly improve their public speaking skills, unleashing their potential as a lecturer or a coach.

A human is a social creature, hence, it is the person’s environment and not genetic predisposition that forms the lion's’ share of their personal qualities. Responding to expectations of society, people tend to enhance their inborn traits that are commonly approved and appreciated. As a result, personal qualities are constantly undergoing a process of calibrating to address human social needs which eliminates the role of genetic predisposition.

In conclusion, I am highly convinced that even though some basic human features are genetically determined, people are adaptive to social and personal challenges encountered which is the driving force of personal development.
