Yevgeny and other 2 ethnic Russian soldiers were captured by Muslim Chechens. They were tortured for around 100 days and were asked to take off their crosses and convert to Islam, but they rejected every time.
On 23 May 1996, on Yevgeny's 19th birthday, after more than 100 days of tortures, Yevgeny and two other Russian soldiers were offered to renounce their Orthodox Christian faith and convert to Islam for the final time. Yevgeny refused to convert to Islam and even to remove the silver cross he wore. After that decision, he was beheaded by Chechens.
