The French military is leaving its base in Timbuktu in northern Mali and handing over the keys to local security forces.

France withdrew troops from the city after eight years of presence as part of the anti-terrorist Operation "Barkhan". Earlier, the French had left the settlements of Kidal and Tesalit.
