1899: The Hilsner Affair, a series of trials following an accusation against Leopold Hilsner, of Polna, Bohemia begins.
Anežka Hrůzová was a 19-year-old Czech Catholic girl, living in a nearby village. She worked as a seamstress in Polná, 2 miles away. On the afternoon of March 29, 1899, she left work as usual, but did not return home. 3 days later, her body was found in a forest, her throat having been cut and her garments torn. Nearby was a pool of blood, some blood-stained stones, parts of her garments, and a rope with which she had been either strangled to death or dragged, after the murder, to the place where the body was found. It was odd that she had disappeared during Passover and the sheriff and the people began speculating this was a case of ritual murder.
There was a subsequent investigation and trial and Hilsner was sentenced to death. This was later changed to life in prison and then full pardon by Karl I.
Hilsner gave up his accomplices and then recanted his testimony. They were never tried.
