The WSOP dates announced
The series returns to the Rio between September 30 to November 23.

The full schedule has not been announced but it begins with a charity event for healthcare workers, a $25,000 HORSE tournament and a $5 million guaranteed event called 'The Reunion'.

The Main Event takes place between November 4 and November 17.

The World Series of Poker Europe also returns in Rozvadov at King's Casino between November 18 and December 8. It is expected to feature 15 bracelet events including the €10,000 Main Event.

As expected, all of this is subject to change and to whatever the current COVID safety protocols are in place at the time. The world will be a long way forward with vaccinations by the time the first live bracelet event takes place but realistically there will still be travel restrictions and social distancing impacting aspects of the series this year.

Hellmuth vs Negreanu Round 1 is over

Negreanu was also the bookmaker's favourite in the match, but Phil Hellmuth had other ideas. Despite Negreanu boasting a 95,000 to 5,000 chiplead in the early going, Hellmuth slowly and patiently clawed it back over the course of six hours.

The match ended with both men very shallow and Hellmuth triumphed when his pocket nines held against the 7 6 of Negreanu. Despite all the criticisms of his game, that is Phil's fourth victory in a row in the High Stakes Duel format, having beaten Antonio Esfandiari three times previously.

Hellmuth now holds the $100,000 prize and belt from the match. If Negreanu wants to play again he has to buy-in for $100,000. When Hellmuth wins three in a row he can bow out with his winnings or carry on, but each time the buy-in doubles. After that new challengers have 30 days to lay down the gauntlet.

EPT Sochi attracts a record field
Most of the world may still be in lockdown but 852 entries made the most of a rare live event on European soil.

While most established live European events are remaining tight lipped about their 2021 plans or even cancelling hotly anticipated tournaments, Casino Sochi stands as a rare exception.

That was the venue for the latest iteration of EPT Sochi and it attracted a record field of 852 entries. The largest field ever for EPT Sochi.

The winner of the ₽175,000 Main Event was established professional Artur Martirosyan, known as “mararthur1” online, who took down a first prize of ₽24.633, which is roughly $325,000.

“I have always wanted to win the EPT title,” the 23-year-old winner said. “The trophy has such a cool design – it was one of the reasons why I did not think of cutting a deal.”

The PSPC has been postponed again
For the second year in a row we will not have the 25k High Roller full of hopeful Platinum Pass winners.

The tournament was set to take place in Barcelona but with COVID cases surging in both Spain and mainland Europe right now, the event was not viable this summer.

With the exception of events in Sochi and parts of the US, no operator has dared to even schedule a makor live poker tournament yet despite the positivity surrounding COVID vaccines.

The PSPC in particular does not feel like a tournament that would lend itself well to an online version. It really was about the camaradarie and underdog stories that could only really work in a live setting.

The Rule of 4 & 2
A tried and tested short hand method for working out your odds of hitting your draw on the turn and river.

Count your outs then multiply them by 2 or 4
One of the first introductions to the math of poker many players experienced is the Rule of 4 & 2, which is a simple heuristic that still holds up today.

It is a simplified method of calculating your odds of hitting a draw on the turn or river. Quite simply if you have a drawing hand on the flop, the odds of you hitting your made hand is the number of outs you have multiplied by 4 when you have two cards to come, or multiply them by 2 if you have one card to come.

So let's say you have K 9 on a flop of A 6 3 , if you hit your heart by the river you will have the best hand. There are nine hearts left in the deck, so if you see both the turn and river, multiply 9 by 4 and you get 36%. You roughly have a 36% chance of hitting your flush.

If the turn brings a 2 then there is only one card to come, now you multiply your outs by 2. 9 x 2 = 18%. You are now 18% likely to hit your flush on the river.

The Rule of 4 & 2 is most useful when you are considering calling a bet or making a semi bluff. In our original example if the pot is $100 and your opponent goes all-in for their remaining $66, a quick calculation will tell you that you only need 29% equity to break even here. Since you are 36% to hit the nuts and there is also a slim chance hitting a pair might win it for you, that makes this an easy call.

Likewise, when you know you have 36% equity against any hand, that makes semi bluffing very enticing here. You could go all-in if you think your opponent is likely to fold a decent amount of the time and if they don't you still win 36% of the time.

Useful, but exploitable
Blocker bets are useful when you have a marginal hand or are chasing a draw.

If you get to the river with second pair and think your hand is good, you don't want to get pushed off it or face a tough decision when you check to an aggressive opponent. By firing out a 20% of pot bet you avoid having to call a full pot bet, you might get your opponent to call with a weaker hand and at the same time you will get them to fold a hand they might have successfully bluffed you with.

If you are chasing a flush or straight draw and a big bet from your opponents would not give you the right odds to call, a small blocker bet might lay you the correct odds you need to see another street. It also might occassionally get folds or you can get away cheaply when you miss.

The risk with blocker bets is that it is quite obvious what you are doing to a thinking poker player. They work well against weak regulars but a good aggressive player will recognise you rarely have a big hand when you bet out of position for a small amount and bluff raise you off a lot of pots.

For this reason, against good players, you have to incorporate balance with the range of hands you blocker bet with. You have to occassionally make a small out of position bet with a very strong hand to avoid being exploited by an aggressive opponent capable of bluff raising.

Blocker Bets
Another tip for newbies and this time a way to avoid facing big bets when you are out of position.

A blocker bet, not to be confused with blockers, is a tool you can use when you are out of position.

A blocker bet is when you make a small bet out of position to encourage your opponent to call a smaller amount than they would have bet if they were checked to.

So for example, if you expect your opponent to bet 2/3rd pot if you checked, you make a bet of 1/5 pot in the hopes they will call.

It is a useful tool both when you want to see the next card cheaply as well as on the river if want to get your hand to showdown for the minimum.

poker.net domain name was sold for $750,000
Records are broken as the biggest ever purchase for a .net domain name goes to a website (presumably) about poker.

The domain name 'poker.net' has sold for $750,000 this month. The purchase has been made by ADX Labs, a technology company in Minnesota.

This is not only a jaw-dropping figure for a poker website domain, it is also the biggest ever purchase of a .net domain name. The previous record was $500,000 for mobile.net back in 2014.

All of which suggests that poker is still very much considered a growth industry, at the very least in the United States.

It is far from the biggest poker related domain name of all, however. In 2017 the owner of the domain 'poker.com' was looking for offers in the region of $20 million. It doesn't look like that sold and the website has been dormant for years. It is currently owned by a private owner in Milton Keynes, UK.

Is your opponent capable of bluffing?
Let's go with a simple example. In a $0/50/$1 game Let's say you call a $2 raise in the Big Blind with with 9 8 .

The flop comes 6 A 2 .

You check and your opponent bets $3 and you call. The turn is a J .

You check and your opponent checks. The river is 9 .

You have made third pair and you suspect your opponent has missed this board, given they checked turn after being called on the flop. Betting now would be a mistake because your opponent would fold all the hands you beat and would at least call you with a Ax, Jx or better. If you check and call the bet, you have a chance to get some value from all the hands that missed.

If your opponent does bet, you can do some rough maths to work out whether to call. Let's say in this example they bet $5 into the $10 pot on the river. You have to call $5 to win $15. This is a 3-to-1 proposition meaning your opponent only has to be bluffing 25% of the time for this call to be profitable. This is where your reads and instincts about your opponent come into play. If you think they are bluffing more than 25% of their range, this is a call.

Bluff catching is a topic where blockers are particularly useful. If you block some of the hands your opponent would value bet with then it makes calling easier. In our example above, we 'block' other missed flush draws which makes the hands they would bluff with less likely.

One final note and that is bluff catching only works when an opponent understands why they are betting. There are a lot of inexperienced players who would bet a hand like 77 on this river even though it is only going to get called by a better hand.

Bluff catching
How do you play when you can't beat anything other than a bluff? You play it like a bluff catcher.

You usually know how to play a very strong hand and that is you bet for value. You also know how to play a weak hand, you have to fold it or turn it into a bluff. What about when it is something in the middle? For that you often need a bluff catcher.

A bluff catcher is a hand that can beat everything your opponent would bluff with but none of the hands they would value bet with. This tends to be when your opponent has a polarised range (ie. very strong hands or very weak hands, with nothing in the middle) and you have a medium strength hand.

When you have a bluff catcher you can't really bet for value. You will only get called by hands you beat and fold out all the hands you beat. When you elect to check and call with a bluff catcher, you allow your opponent to make a mistake.

Bally's swoop in to buy the World Poker Tour
It looked like a done deal but now the WPT has accepted a last minute better offer from a US casino chain.

Casino and racetrack chain Bally's swooped in with a last minute offer worth $90 million which has now been accepted.

Allied Entertainment, the parent company of the World Poker Tour, confirmed the 'superior proposal' had been accepted yesterday. This offer is just for the World Poker Tour, not for Allied Esports which was part of the original Element deal.

Element Partners LLC now have until 17:00 PT on March 19 to make a better offer for poker's longest running tour. Aside from the much more lucrative financial offer, Bally's has vast experience in the US casino industry as well as offering more opportunities for potential online gaming licenses.
